Scientists have succeeded in demonstrating the effects of meditation on the human brain. According to this, meditation exercises lead to a faster switch between two levels of consciousness in the brain within just a few weeks.
One is active as a "default mode" when the brain is awake and one is not concentrating on the outside world, for example when daydreaming or when one's thoughts wander.
The other is used for focusing and is used for tasks that require attention. Students who had only completed a meditation course for 8 weeks were shown to switch between these two networks more quickly. This means they were able to concentrate and switch off more quickly. The Tibetans call this ease of switching between the two levels of consciousness "mental flexibility".
